HISTORY

One of the original counties in the state, Monterey County was created in 1850. The city of Monterey was the capital of California under Spanish and Mexican rule. Monterey is also known for being the site of the state’s first theater, public building, public library, publicly funded school, printing press and newspaper. Salinas was laid out in 1867 and incorporated in 1874. The county seat is the hometown of Nobel Prize in Literature laureate John Steinbeck.

CLIMATE

The Pacific Ocean greatly influences the weather in the region acting as a “natural air conditioner.” Similar to the Central Coast of California, the climate is classified as mild Mediterranean. Summer high temperatures are typically in the 70s and winter lows average in the 40s. 13 inches of rain each year is also typical.
